About the College
The twin coastal districts Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are known as the educational hubs of Karnataka. A number of renowned institutions and education foundations have their roots here. Imparting high quality learning across a wide range of fields and domains, these institutions have become sources of knowledge for aspiring individuals. One of the prominent names in the field of education is the Dakshina Kannada Gowda Vidya Sangha (R.) Sullia. Incepted on 7 February 1921, DKGVS has constantly taken up initiatives to open educational institutions to cover varied streams that add value to the society. The history of the educational initiatives taken by this organization dates back to 1944. The then president of DKGVS, Late Sannayya Patel succeeded in getting required land in favor of DKGVS to set up centres for imparting education. This land was used to set up a Hostel for the poor students pursuing the education in Puttur. DKGVS founded a hostel on 3rd June 1946 to facilitate their stay.
The initiation of Sri Mahalingeshwara ITI (SMITI) was the brainchild of Senior and a veteran Gowda community leader, Dr Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda. Dr Gowda, a patron of education had the vision to impart technical training to poor rural students. SMITI came into existence in the same hostel building on 16th September 1986.
This was a historic moment in the history of Puttur as SMITI was the first ITI in Dakshina Kannada district. The then Principal of K.V.G. Law College, Sullia, Prof. Paddmbailu Venkatramana Gowda and well known social worker, late Mr Gundya Annayya Gowda were appointed as the President and Vice-President of DKGVS respectively.
Managing Correspondents: Late Mrs Padmavathi Puttappa was the Correspondent of SMITI and was the leading light for all its early ventures. Post her demise, popular local leader and social worker Late Mr C.P. Jayarama Gowda took the organization to even greater heights with his constant pursuit to make this a premier ITI institution in the region. The organization is currently spearheaded by Mr U.P.
